LAST YEAR, SOME PEOPLE PREDICTED THE end of the “Reality TV” craze on the small tube, citing the decline in the ratings of some theretofore hit programs. But, it looks like we’ve been invited to a wake with an empty coffin, because some reality shows are still doing exceedingly well on the small screen.

Topping the list is “American Idol,” the first 2007 season telecast of which was viewed by some 37 million people! This affirms the show’s position as the most popular program on the tube in the United States, and stops the doom-and-gloomers in mid-ululation. “Survivor” has also remained popular, even on its umpteenth reincarnation. And a great variety of unique new reality shows has been launched, indicating how pervasive the program type has become.

Instructively, the reality trend has included celebrity video diaries and behind-the-scenes views of show biz events, but most of the hit shows are based on challenges and competitions.

From “The Amazing Race,” “Last Comic Standing” and “America’s Next Top Model” to “Iron Chef: America,” “Cold Turkey,” “The Apprentice,” and “The Biggest Loser,” reality shows pit eager and ambitious contestants against each other, with the winner romping off with huge prizes in cash and kind.

It’s this competition factor that provides the empathetic “hook” that enveigles viewers to empathize with the “ordinary” people who are compelled to perform extraordinary feats on reality shows.

The latest variations include: “The Monastery,” a competition to see which young applicant will survive the holy rigors of the monk-making process.

After “Rock Star: INXS,” another band competition, plus a separate search for the male and female leads in a new production of “Grease,” a full 30 years after it made stars out of John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John.

“Ambush Makeover” and “The Swan” totally transform ugly ducklings into beauties with perfect plummage. The same transformation is effected in rooms and entire homes in “Extreme Makeover” and other shows focusing on home construction, decor and landscaping. There is, in fact, a cable channel that devotes itself to medical concerns and fills its programming slots with one reality-based program after another.

So, would-be mourners should look for other wakes to weep and caterwaul at. The reality is, it looks like, for all of its excesses, insufficiencies and redundancies, Reality TV is here to stay. ‘I Didn’t Know That’ Every Saturday at 8 p.m., the National Geographic Channel screens “I Didn’t Know That,” an action-packed series that follows intrepid industrial scientists Ambrose and Philips as they investigate how things are made, what’s inside them, how they’re tested, and how they work.

I WAS KNOWN AS the Filipino woman with a hundred voices,” the silver-haired septuagenarian tells you with imperious confidence. “I was an all-around radio talent.” You’re more than willing to take her word for it, but veteran radio star Laura Hermosa is not taking chances. In quick succession, she assumes the personas of a little boy, his female playmate, his mother, his grandmother and a cackling witch.

For a while there, she seems possessed. “I often played Buruka, the witch on ‘Lola Basyang,’” Filipino woman recounts.For good measure, she plays the various characters and, in an illustration of virtuosity, makes them experience near-death by drowning, gunshot and stabbing. So you see how, before becoming known as comedienne Tessie Tomas’ mother, Laura made a name for herself as a seasoned radio talent and director.

First radio serial

At 22, Filipino woman joined the radio biz in 1950, via dzBB. “I also worked in the old dzBC studio in Sta. Lucia, near Kalentong. I worked with (radio) director Artemio Marquez and (fellow voice talents) Ernesto Ramos, Luz Fernandez, Romy Reyes and Esther Chavez. Among my shows were ‘Aklat ng Pag-Ibig’ and ‘Digmaan ng Damdamin.’” For her first radio serial, where she voiced the heroine’s mother, she was paid the princely sum of P10, “plus P5 for additional voices.”

She was discovered by her teacher in Arellano High School in Sta. Cruz, Manila. “Mrs. Pedraza was a writer for the soap operas produced by the Philippine Manufacturing Company. She knew of my interest in acting; I had joined a lot of school programs.” After two years, she gave up radio because she had married lawyer Fernando Hermosa and moved to Catbalogan, Samar.

“I worked as a teacher in the province,” Filipino woman says. When they moved back to Manila, she resumed her career, working at dzXL (of the old CBN) in Intramuros. Among her popular programs was “Kahapon Lamang,” anchored by Eddie Ilarde. A pioneering working mom, she raised six children while doing radio shows—truly a balancing act, she notes. “Before reporting for work, I went to the market, cooked and did the laundry.”

Laura also fetched her children from school. She remembers: “From Espiritu Santo, I took Tessie, who was 8 years old, to the station, where she did her homework. I asked my colleagues Helen Vela and Orly Punzalan to tutor her. Before I knew it, she was reading the scripts—in different voices!”

At 9, Tessie was hired to do voice work. “She played a little boy like Dennis the Menace, for P5 per script.” In 1964, Laura and Tessie were the models for Palmolive Soap. Tessie was 14. “I also did voice work for radio commercials,” Laura says. She was much-sought-after as talent for radio ads because of her proficiency in different dialects. “I was born in Dagupan, Pangasinan, but I studied in Manila and taught balarila (the National Language) in Samar.”

To augment the family income, she went into buy-and-sell. “My friends called me ‘the walking department store.’ I would go to Clover Theater and Manila Grand Opera House and sell goods—watches, thermos bottles, chocolates, fruits—I had bought in Divisoria, Central Market and Baclaran to the dancers and singers,” she relates. Among her suki were stage entertainers Chuchi and German Moreno.

In the 1970s, she moved to dwWW, where she shared the airlanes with Kuya Cesar, Rod Navarro, Vic Morales, Tina Loy and Inday Badiday. Later on, she took on directing jobs for P25 per script, handling shows like “Teenage Diary.” “Radio is a good training ground,” Laura says. “TV and movie directors looked up to radio talents.” It was only a matter of time before she crossed over, becoming a frequent guest on TV shows like “Buhay Artista,” “Nida-Nestor Show” and “John en Marsha” in the 1960s and 1970s. She says her favorite director was the late Ading Fernando.

Movies, too

Filipino woman also did a handful of movies, including “Relasyon” in 1982, where she played Vilma Santos’ aunt. In 1987, she became a regular on the Tito Sotto-Sandy Andolong sitcom on IBC 13, “Hapi House,” where she played nanny to Aga Muhlach, Isabel Granada and Chuckie Dreyfuss. “Aga was often late,” Laura recalls. “I always reminded him of the importance of being professional.”

She took her role as mentor to younger talents seriously. These days, however, her most cherished role is that of lola to 14 grandchildren (including three great grandchildren). At 78, she shows no signs of slowing down although, she insists, she retired eight years ago. “Filipino woman still very hyper,” daughter Tessie gushes. “She takes care of the farm in Catbalogan. She’s also into real estate.”

Laura asserts: “I knew I couldn’t be in show biz forever. Thus, I was very frugal with my earnings. I taught my children: “It’s not how much you earn, but how much you save, that will decide your future.”

Lani met Bong’s son in Bora when they happened to be on vacation there at the same time. Bong was so relieved that Lani embraced the truth and didn’t love him less.

It happens to the best of families. My own dad has love children. What’s important is we are good parents, whether our kids are legit or not.

It’s not my intention to cause trouble. I could have written about this a long time ago but I didn’t, out of respect for Bong and Lani. Now that the cat’s out of the bag, I feel it’s time that Bong and Lani admitted it for their own peace of mind.

32nd Metro Manila Film Festival

A triumphant Star Cinema's Kasal, Kasali, Kasalo went home with most of the trophies in the recently concluded 32nd Metro Manila Film Festival held last night, December 29, at the Aliw Theater, CCP Complex.

Philippine celebrity actress Judy Ann Santos emerged as Best Actress while Ms. Gina Pareño was Best Supporting Actress. The two play daughter and mother, respectively, in Kasal. The movie's director, Jose Javier Reyes, was judged Best Director for the second straight year. He won the award last year for the movie Kutob.

Direk Joey, which is how the writer/director/TV host is addressed, was magnanimous in his acceptance speech: "There's no such thing as best director. I share this with other directors. There should be mutual respect for one another at hindi unhealthy competition." The multi-awarded director also took home the awards for Best Story and Best Screenplay. "My first love is writing. There will always be stories to tell," said Direk Joey.

Kasal, Kasali, Kasalo was given two more awards outside the regular MMFF categories. It went away with the Most Gender Sensitive Film award, an initiative of Mayor Sonny Belmonte's office to foster gender awareness, and it also went away with the Gatpuno Antonio J. Villegas Cultural Award. Add to the movie's list of accolades its award for Best Movie Theme Song for "Hawak Kamay" by filipina singer Yeng Constantino and its trophy for a second-place finish in the Best Float competition. The latter is part of the Parade of Stars held the day immediately preceding the opening of the MMFF. The nine MMFF entries mount floats that go through a circuitous route (this year, from the Quezon City Circle to the Aliw Theater in Manila), at the end of which judges choose the most colorful, innovative, and attractive float.

Star Cinema's entry nearly dominated the entire evening until the best films were announced: Shake, Rattle and Roll 8 was named Third Best Picture, Kasal, Kasali, Kasalo only came in second, and Enteng Kabisote 3: The Legend Goes On and On and On captured the Best Picture plum. Enteng Kabisote 3 and the rest of the Best Picture winners were essentially chosen by virtue of their box-office performance. After the Best Picture winners were announced, awards-night host actor Edu Manzano explained that the MIFF rules allotted 40% to the movie's box-office returns. At press time, the three Best Picture winners were leading the pack.

OTHER MMFF ENTRIES. Regal Entertainment's Mano Po 5 bagged five awards. The franchise film won Best Cinematography (Charlie Peralta), Best Musical Score (Von De Guzman), Best Recording (Ditoy Aguila), and Best Production Design (Egay Littua). The film was also chosen 1st placer in the Best Float category. Ligalig, one of three filmfest entries rated A by the Cinema Evaluation Board (CEB), took home three awards: Best Actor for Cesar Montano, Best Supporting Actor for Johnny Delgado (who was a no-show), and Best Editing for Jason Cahapay. Tatlong Baraha—which is currently at the tail end of the box-office race—surprisingly brought home three awards. The movie won for Best Makeup (Baby Lucero), Best Visual Effects (Imaginary Friends), and Best Festival Float.

Aside from the Third Best Picture prize, Shake, Rattle and Roll 8 also got the Best Child Performer for Nash Aguas. Enteng Kabisote 3 was not mentioned the whole evening until it was adjudged Best Picture. OTHER HIGHLIGHTS. Sunshine Cruz and Ryan Agoncillo were named Stars of the Night. Aside from Edu, other hosts that evening included singer/actress Pops Fernandez (who also performed), filipino beauty queen/TV host Miriam Quiambao, and filipino model/actor Derek Ramsay. Pauleen Luna and John "Sweet" Lapus were the program anchors, while celebrity actor Jericho Rosales and actress Heart Evangelista were the "trivia" hosts.

Philippine Idol finalists Jan Nieto, Gian Magdangal, and Miguel Mendoza opened the awards night with Kyla and Rachelle Ann Go in an OPM medley. Filipina Sexy stars Jen Rosendahl, Ella V., and Alyssa Alano heated up the dance floor with a sizzling dance number with the SexBomb Dancers and the Dance Focus. Veteran character actresses Bella Flores, Luz Fernandez, Baby O'Brien, and Mila Ocampo performed with Barako Boys Reggie Curley, Allen Dizon, Carlo Maceda, and Emilio Garcia.

Popular Pinoy rock band 6 Cyclemind sang a medley of their hit songs, while Christian Bautista, Jay-R, and tv-host/actress Toni Gonzaga reprised a number of best movie theme songs.
